Winter track looks forward to successful season

Friday, December 19, 2014 by Caleb Cohen

The members of Saratoga Springs High School’s indoor track team are looking forward to another year of success in the Suburban Council.

Sprinters and long distance runners complete different workouts for practice.

Kylie Podeswa and Eliza Jelenik, two sprinters for the winter track team, each run about one mile per day for practice. Ellery Bianco says that she runs “a minimum of one and a maximum of three on hard days.”

Will Navin said that he runs “about seven or eight [miles per day]. Per week 50 or 60.”

These accomplished Saratoga runners have set goals for themselves and for the team for the coming year.

Navin hopes to run a 4:35 mile, an ambitious goal.

Podeswa wants to “clear a height in pole vault,” and to “win sectionals.”

“[I want to set a personal record] in all of my events, win all of my sectional events, go to states… and to send as many girls off to the state meet as possible,” said Bianco.

The common goal of the team this year, to defeat their archrivals at Shen, seems to be as important to the team as its overall success. Jelenik hopes to “beat Shen in suburbans and sectionals.”

The difficult daily workouts seem to be paying off. Saratoga won its previous meet at Union College over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School.

The team’s next league meet is on Sunday at 1:45 p.m. at Union College.
