Oscar looks: Students pick the best and worst

Friday, February 27, 2015 by Skyler Stanford

The 2015 Oscars, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, brought smiles and in some cases cheers to the homes of millions. It was a night filled with joyful and inspiring moments as well as a few shockers, many of which came from the red carpet. Fifty Saratoga Springs High School students were surveyed about their opinions of the best and worst dressed women of the night.

Lorelei Linklater, shown above at left, was voted worst dressed, and Zoe Saldana, shown above at right, was voted best dressed.

With twenty-seven votes, Zoe Saldana’s stunning, form-fitting, blush plink Versace gown was the best out of four other possible contenders: Naomi Watts, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston, and Rosamund Pike. From Zoe’s classic up-do, detailed diamond necklace, and the light color of the dress that complemented her skin tone, the look was utterly flawless. Jennifer Aniston came in second place with eleven votes she was wearing another beautiful bodycon Versace dress that hugged her in all the right places. Her overall look was kept simple with nude shoes and her hair was left down and un-styled, giving us all the classic chic but not too fancy look that fits her easy-going personality.

On the other hand, Lorelei Linklater was voted the worst dressed with thirty-one votes out of a list of four people also including Margot Robbie, Jessica Chastain, and Patricia Arquette. Her all too busy, Gabriela Cadena dress included solid black and red color block overlaps that were far too plain next to the unusual see-though floral pattern, not to mention the long slit that seemed to walk the line between classy and trashy. Her dress definitely caught people’s attention and not in a good way.

The runner-up for the worst dressed was Margot Robbie with twelve votes. Her look was really disappointing for anyone who saw Margot in The Wolf of Wall Street. Her all-black Saint Laurent dress didn’t showcase her figure despite the awkward but exaggerated V-neck. She also wore a blue necklace that went with nothing and drew attention to the blandness of the dress.

Although it proved to be a hit-or-miss scenario, all of the celebrities who took risks and choose to step out of the box should be applauded for their bravery.

  1. Interesting choices. I wonder which look an SSHS student would wear to the prom if given the chance.

Did Ms. Stanford find that SSHS students were well aware of the Oscar fashion choices?

Good question! Most students either needed their memories refreshed or simply did not watch the Oscars. So, I supplied each student surveyed with pictures of each option for best and worst choices.
