Week five was a short week for the Blue Streaks, with only one home game, but they made it count.

The Saratoga varsity baseball team defeated Niskayuna on Wednesday by a score of 13-3, behind a complete game from Jack Herman and a strong offense in the beginning of the game.

The Streaks started off strong with a six-run first inning with hits from Nick Kondo, Marshall Kiesow, Brenden Coffey, Brandon Hipsley and Zach Stacey.

“Once again, try to take a good approach to it, score some runs early on, take advantage of some of their mistakes, and when you do that, you can play a little bit more loose.” said head coach Dean Bailey of his team’s offense.

Jack Herman tossed a complete game in his first home start of 2015. He surrendered three runs, seven hits, and no walks and delivered a pair of strikeouts.

“I just went out there and just tried to throw strikes; luckily [we] got an early lead in the first inning, and that built my confidence,” Herman said.

Herman also went 1-3 with a walk on offense.

Later in the game, Saratoga was able to add four more runs in the fifth inning, and preceded that with a run in the third and another in the fourth.

There were multiple team scouts from the MLB, all looking at Niskayuna outfielder Garrett Whitley. He went 3-3 in the contest, with two singles and a triple.

Saratoga is now 13-2 on the season, and have gone 10-2 in league play. This puts them second in the league behind only Shenendehowa even though they are still undefeated at home. They now enter week six, the last week of regular season before the playoffs begin. They will have three home games in week six.
