The showing from Saratoga’s defense was not enough to get over the edge in their season opener.
The Mamaroneck Tigers defeated the Saratoga hockey team on Friday night at the Weibel Avenue Ice Rink by a score of 5-3 in their 2015-2016 season opener.
The Tigers found the back of the net first on a goal just over three minutes in from senior captain Alex Ewald. Jake Fauler would score for the Blue Streaks just over five minutes later, and the game was tied 1-1 after the first fifteen minutes had been played.
“We’re just like them, we got a lot of guys back and we played better than we did before, we knew this was going to be a really big game for us,” Mamaroneck head coach Michael Chiapparelli said of his team.
The Tigers would tally two more goals in the second period, on goals from Will Kirk and Matt Dicicco. Sean Holmes added one for Saratoga to make it 3-2 after two periods.
Saratoga goalie Danny Hobbs allowed five goals Friday, on 27 shots from Mamaroneck.
“He made some good saves and kept us in the game when we needed it,” Saratoga head coach Dave Torres said of Hobbs.
Mamaroneck would score a fourth goal just under seven minutes into the third period, this time from Will Arbo. They would score again about seven minutes later from Matt Vaughn.
“We just want to go out there and compete for every shift,” Chiapparelli said of the offense that tallied five goals.
Saratoga would answer the second Tigers goal just fourteen seconds after it, with Brendan Coffey tallying the final goal of the game, making it 5-3.
Saratoga won their Saturday game against St. Joe’s by a score of 4-2. Both games were part of the Don Kauth Memorial Tournament.
