Two first period goals helped out by a very strong defensive effort led to a win.
The Mamaroneck Tigers defeated the Saratoga Blue Streaks on Saturday afternoon at Weibel Avenue Ice Rink by a score of 3-0 as part of the 2016 Don Kauth Memorial Tournament.
Going in, the defending state champions were looking to carry momentum from Friday’s win into the second day of the tournament. They did that, with Michael Carducci scoring twice in the first period alone, giving the Tigers a 2-0 edge after the first fifteen minutes. The first tally came 3:39 into the tilt, and the second one at 13:30.
The defense of Mamaroneck held up strong throughout, allowing just three shots from the Blue Streaks in the first period, and only let up eight for the entire game.
“I thought our defense did a really good job, forcing the tempo, skating at our pace, and of course (Andrew Garguilo) had to make a couple good saves,” Mamaroneck head coach Michael Chiapparelli said.
The offense was also very strong, as they took 30 shots on Saturday. 27 of those shots were stopped.
“We were a little disappointed that we didn’t finish more. Give their goalie credit, he made some really good saves,” Chiapparelli said.
Penalties proved to be a problem for the Blue Streaks offense. They took eight penalties over the course of the afternoon, for a total of 12 penalty minutes, nearly a third of the game. However, their defense held up, not allowing a power-play goal. Saratoga gave a lot of credit to senior Jake Fauler for keeping it that way.
“He gives you a thousand percent every game. He’s a great hockey player, he’s a great athlete, we’re lucky we have him,” Saratoga assistant coach Terry O’Brien said, who was filling in for head coach Dave Torres, who was out of town on Saturday.
In comparison, Mamaroneck only had seven and a half minutes worth of penalties called on them.
Mamaroneck would score a third and final goal with 39 seconds to play, on a shot from Harrison Fried, which made it 3-0 and put the game away.
With this win, Mamaroneck improves to 5-0 after winning the 2016 NYSPHSAA state title.
Saratoga falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss, and have yet to win a game this year. They will play again on Wednesday with a home game, taking on CBA which will begin at 6:45 PM to open up their league schedule.
