Behind two big innings, Saratoga varsity baseball was able to continue their hot start on Wednesday afternoon at East Side Rec as they beat Averill Park by a final score of 10-4.
Heading into the bottom of the third inning with the game trailing 2-1, the Blue Streaks kicked their offense into high gear as they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on six hits to make the game 6-2. Two innings later in the fifth, they did it again, sending another 10 to the plate, scoring another four runs on five hits.
Meanwhile on the other side of the ball, after Jack Cairns had been pulled in the third inning due to control problems, Zach Vavasour was virtually unhittable, as he went 3.2 hitless innings and only allowed two baserunners, both coming on errors.
“Our message since spring training has been next guy up. If you can’t get it done, it’s nothing personal against you, but if you can’t get the job done, we have a ton of arms, and we’re going to the next guy,” Saratoga head coach Andy Cuthbertson said.
Averill Park tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but it was too little too late as Saratoga came out with a victory as they improve to 9-2 on the season. They will play again on Friday as they take on Bethlehem on the road. They will return home on Monday for a tilt with Guilderland. Both games will start at 4:15 PM.
Averill Park falls to 1-7-1 on the season following the loss. They will also be back in action on Friday as they face Troy at home. That game will also begin at 4:15 PM.
