Adirondack United, the newly founded girl’s interscholastic hockey team is an exciting step for Saratoga and the surrounding districts. In the last couple of weeks, 28 girls have joined the team. It is a chance for girls to get to know new people and to be able to play for their schools at a varsity level.
In Saratoga, it is uncommon for girls to play hockey. Saratoga Springs High School has never had an all-girls hockey team, and we’ve always had a varsity team dominated by boys. But in the past couple of weeks, girls came together from not only Saratoga but Queensbury, Hudson Falls, Corinth, Glens Falls, and South Glens Falls to create a team of girls ranging from ages fourteen to eighteen.
Alyssa Temple, a hockey player and a freshman at Saratoga Springs High School, tried out for the team. She was excited to work with others, especially new friends. “For my club hockey team, it’s also many girls from different schools so most of the girls on the high school team I already know from the club season,” she says when asked about the different schools.
For their first game, they all met up at their home rink and took a bus to Syracuse. The girls were very excited about the game. They all showed up looking nice and wore black for their warm-ups. “Once we got into the game, it was a lot of fun and fast-paced game play,” Alyssa says. They ended up winning two to one in overtime, setting a good precedent for the season ahead.
