The announcement of the Saratoga Springs High School’s Drama Club’s spring show Pride and Prejudice, adapted from the original by Jane Austen, brought together a talented group of actors for the last high school production of the 2022-2023 school year. Highly anticipated by the cast, the show was expected to be a great one coming from such a motivated group of students who truly put their all into rehearsals.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. A small outbreak of Covid set rehearsals back a week, generating anxiety as opening night loomed closer. Sahiba Jassal, a junior at SSHS who played Lady Catherine, said, “pulling the play together so quickly with a week of rehearsal lost was definitely super stressful.”
This, on top of the scheduled dates being directly in the middle of AP testing season, was certainly a setback, but it didn’t stop the cast from putting a fantastic show together. “Even though the experience wasn’t the best with getting sick and being worn out from rehearsals on top of AP studying, it’s so rewarding to see the show come together,” Jassal continued.
You’d never know what was going on behind the scenes with how put together the cast looked on stage. The play was one full of energy and humor, a slightly more modernized take on the original. The actors, for their part, fully committed to their roles, an enthusiastic Peter Brueggemann eagerly taking on the energetic personality of Mr. Bingley. There was a cast-wide appreciation for the work they put in and, in Jassal’s words, “we ate the shows up.”
