Little Women is a tale that has remained relevant ever since its first venture into the world as the famous novel written by Louisa May Alcott in 1868, and continued in its many movies, including the 2019 film. Now, to continue its profound legacy, the Saratoga Springs High School (SSHS) Drama Club is bringing this story to life using the play adaptation by Kate Hamill.
Little Women follows four sisters— Jo (played by SSHS Student Sarah Pipino), Meg (Paeton Koshgarian), Beth (Anna Bonner), and Amy (Camille Wilborn)— as they go through the ups and downs of life during the Civil War. Jo, the second oldest of the family, dreams of being a great writer and one day going to Europe (much to the chagrin of Amy, the youngest sister, who’d much rather her sister be “a lady”.) While Jo tries to make her dreams reality, Meg’s romantic dreams with Mr. Brooks (Merritt Nowicki) and Beth’s kind soul will pull at the heartstrings of anyone watching, and Amy’s unfortunate luck with spelling will keep the audience roaring with laughter. Theodore “Laurie” Laurence (Peter Brueggemann), the boy who lives next door and quickly becomes friends with the sisters, and Marmee (Ella Warden), the affectionate yet wise mother of the girls, provide even more depth to the show. Other characters include Hannah (Katelyn Hogan), Mr. Laurence/Mr. Dashwood (Max Mittler), Mrs. Mingott “of the Manhattan Mingotts” (Allison Ott), Aunt March (Ella Wilborn), and Mr. March (Zachary Kopans), who all bring special moments to the show that will be absolutely adored by the audience.
Filled with heartwarming moments, fiery conflict, and undeniable love, this play expresses both the good and bad experiences of a family that, despite their imperfections, chooses to stay together no matter what life throws at them.
