-Andrew Cuomo plans to Run for NYC Mayor: Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced this past Saturday that he will be running for New York City Mayor, against current Mayor Eric Adams. Cuomo was first elected to serve as New York state’s governor in January of 2011 and served three terms until late August of 2021. Since his election in January 2022, Adams has recently come under indictment regarding “federal corruption charges and under scrutiny for critics who question his independence from the [U.S. Presidential Administration]” said AP News. However, Democrat Cuomo may also have a tough race after the scandal back in 2021 caused him to resign from his position as governor. Counting Cuomo’s new entry in the race, there are now over five candidates running against Adams for June’s upcoming election.

– “Economic Blackout” on February 28th-an Effort to Halt U.S. Economy: The People’s Union USA, a “movement advocating for economic resistance, government accountability, and corporate reform,” explained time.com, encouraged U.S. citizens over the course of the last month to plan on not spending any money on the 28th-a 24-hour spending blackout. This blackout was an act of “economic resistance,” said the People’s Union USA, to protest and “to speak through their wallets-or lack of spending- a way to protest the retreat by some companies from diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, as a result from the actions of the current Presidential Administration”, said USA Today. Originally organized by a named John Schwarz, founder of The People’s Union, the movement had the goal of gathering a large group of Americans to collectively boycott large retail companies such as Target, Amazon and Walmart- all companies that significantly dominate the world of everyday consumers. This call for protest flooded social media for the month of February, spreading the word and planning for February 28th. This blackout led to businesses reporting lower transactions, less customers and lower sales. In one day, many Americans were able to significantly affect the economy of a nation- the question is, will its momentum carry on, and what else will be done?
Consumers are boycotting Target, Walmart, Amazon, others. Here’s why.

-Ukraine and American Presidents meet in the Oval Office: On Friday, U.S. President Trump and Vice President Vance met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate the end of the war in Ukraine, but the Oval Office unexpectedly got heated quickly, erupting into “one of the most remarkable Oval Office scenes in year”, states The Hill. On the agenda for the meeting was the signing of the critical minerals deal between Ukraine and the U.S., giving Ukraine the support from the Trump Administration to make peace between the cities of Kyiv and Moscow. What initially started off as Trump welcoming Zelensky into the Oval Office and mentioning his recognition toward Ukrainian soldiers and their bravery, ended in an intense argument between the world leaders, and Trump “insisting Ukraine should express more gratitude for U.S. support and agree to a ceasefire with Russia, even without clear security guarantees from the U.S.,” said TIME. After this meeting of these two countries’ leaders, only time will tell what role America will have down the road in the Russia-Ukraine war.

While living in hospitalization, the pope said he was able to feel more compassion to those suffering in the world currently, stating to AP News, “I feel in my heart the ‘blessing’ that is hidden within frailty, because it is precisely in these moments that we learn even more to trust in the Lord, at the same time, I thank God for giving me the opportunity to share in body and spirit the condition of so many sick and suffering people.”
