On Friday, September 12, the Blue Streaks varsity football team faced the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Spartans in front of a wild and excited home crowd. The Blue Streaks came off a comeback win against Monroe Woodbury on Saturday, September 6th, and with this the goal of bringing their momentum to Friday’s game. The energy under the lights on a perfectly clear night transferred onto the field as the Streaks demolished the Spartans in a 41-7 win.
On Burnt Hills’ second offensive play of the game, Saratoga forced a fumble giving it right back to the Streaks after a punt. Saratoga junior Gavin LaFrance caught two electric passes, one of which lit up the endzone putting the Streaks up 7 to 0 midway through the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Toga sparked two more touchdowns, one from senior Ben Coryea on a goal line rush, and another from passing on a bobbled catch to junior Jayden Lockrow. Burnt Hills responded with a touchdown late in the second quarter making the score 20 to 7 with the Blue Streaks continuing their lead by halftime.
The first half the Spartans’ offense was primarily running the ball but was delayed by the Blue Streaks’ strong defense. Toga’s offense also was full of energy as junior quarterback Bobby Morris connected with his receivers for two touchdowns.
Burnt Hills received the ball to start the second half, but LaFrance made another big play to come up with an interception. Coryea capped off their drive with his second touchdown of the game, causing an uproar in Toga’s student section, which was filled at capacity with neon outfits and tons of school spirit. Right after that drive, the Blue Streaks forced the Spartans to punt. Morris connected with LaFrance again for another chunk play to be punched in on a run from Coryea for another touchdown. It is safe to say that the Toga’s varsity has no problem working together and communicating to execute plays. Coryea credited his offensive line for his three-touchdown performance.
“I get the ball, and I see the endzone,” Coryea said.
Going into quarter number four the Streaks were up 34 to 7. Saratoga’s run defense continued jamming the Spartans offense not allowing much offensively for the Spartans. Toga tallied another rushing touchdown this time from the junior Ty Powell. Saratoga Springs ended the game strong at 41 to 7.
Despite the Blue Streaks’ victory, Toga’s head coach Eric Hayden is eager to keep improving; especially as the season is just beginning.
“We’ve just got to keep getting better at what we do and focus on how Saratoga plays football,” said Coach Hayden.
“Soak it up tonight,” said junior halfback Coryea, “And back to work next week.”
Coach Hayden and the Blue Streaks will look to take their strong team energy and winning skill into this Friday’s home game against a historically good opponent, Christian Brothers Academy. As the theme is USA, bring your school spirit to support!
