United in Pink: Walking for Strength, Support and Bravery

October 13, 2025 by Sophia Karrel (‘29)

On October 11th, community members gathered at Pitney Meadows Community Farm to participate in the “I Pink I Can” 5K. The event was hosted by the non-profit To Life and was open to runners and walkers alike, experienced and inexperienced. The 5K served as a way for people in the community to come together and support those who are going through cancer, and to raise funds for To Life’s programs.

Since 1998, To Life has been a non-profit organization that offers support for those in all stages of cancer treatments. Proceeds from events like this 5K fund resources such as support groups, educational programs, and more. Their work aims to make patients feel confident, seen, and informed during and after their cancer battle.

The “I Pink I Can” 5K itself consisted of a walk around the Pitney Meadows Farm on a brisk, sunny Saturday morning. Attendees decked out in head-to-toe pink attire to show their support for breast cancer awareness and in solidarity with those affected. People from all walks of life united to represent both those currently battling cancer, and in memory of those who’ve passed because of their battles. Participants agreed that the event was a vibrant celebration of life, strength, and bravery.

Attendee Melissa, who is herself battling with cancer stated, “My colleagues, family and friends formed a team in today’s 5K. They continue to show me their love and support in meaningful ways. It was a beautiful morning, full of inspiration. What a wonderful way to support an incredible organization helping local breast cancer patients, survivors and thrivers in our area!” Fellow participant Julie DeMarco, added, “I am here to support, not just women, but everyone battling breast cancer. I want to support both our breast cancer warriors and those we’ve lost, like my close friend Tony.”

After crossing the finish line, participants had the opportunity to indulge in treats from Kona Ice and the @FirstBite food truck. Pitney meadows also provided activities such as a wildflower bomb station to participate in. The “I Pink I Can” 5K was a great representation of the importance of showing up for those struggling with Breast Cancer. Those who missed the event can still contribute by donating online at tolife.org!
