Soon after the start of the calendar New Year on January 1 comes the Lunar New Year starting early to mid February. This Chinese tradition correlates with zodiacs assigned to every year. The 2026 Lunar New Year is that of the Horse zodiac, preceding the Snake zodiac of 2025. But what is the meaning and origin of the Lunar New Year, especially relating to last years’ and this years’ zodiac relationship?
The Lunar New Year is a celebration of new beginnings, established during the Han Dynasty (though not specifically recorded as a clear date) in ancient China. However, it is celebrated in many other Asian countries and consists of many festivities and traditions. The celebration of the Lunar New Year begins on the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, but its significance and meaning is carried throughout the entire year.
The role of Chinese zodiacs in the Lunar New Year came from an ancient legend in Chinese mythology about a race between animals who later became the zodiacs assigned to each new year. This legend follows the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig that complete a race created by the Jade Emperor to be able to organize time in a 12-year cycle, given the 12 animals that finish the race in that given order.
According to this cycle, the year of the Snake fell on 2025, and the year of the Horse fell in 2026. The Snake zodiac is a representation of transformation, intuition, and strategy, which can be connected to 2025 in what many people have described as a year of just that; release and intentional decision making. However, these traits from 2025’s year of the Snake have often been presented in a more negative manner, given many people’s opinions over the media as a commonly addressed topic. This can be described almost like the shedding of a snake’s skin: uncomfortable but necessary. Difficulty in changing anything is necessary for success, and that success is what we can expect in 2026’s year of the Horse.
The Horse zodiac is a representation of forward momentum, inspiration, and expression, which are all clear examples of a transition from last year to this year. If 2025 felt like an unraveling of negative emotions and discomfort, look to 2026 with hope and clarity, as this year’s zodiac brings fresh energy and a clear insight for achieving your goals, stemming from your movement through last year.
All that being said, the Lunar New Year is a wonderful celebration of new energy for each new year, and its astrological meanings are certainly something to look into if you want to visualize what is to come in the near future. Happy year of the Horse, and let it bring a great new beginning with 2026’s start!
