– 37 Year Old Alex Pretti Shot by ICE In Minneapolis: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have been involved in a fatal shooting incident as they continue to carry out enforcement operations in Minneapolis. Just 17 days after the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. Citizen and ICU nurse was killed by an ICE agent in the city this past Saturday, January 24. Moments before his death, he had “confronted immigration agents conducting operations in the city,” stated USA Today. Department of Homeland Security officials had claimed that the agents used force after an attempt to disarm him, but disclosed video footage reported by CNN has shown a “federal officer had taken a gun away from [Pretti] prior to a Border Patrol agent fatally shooting him”. However, Pretti was confirmed to be a local gun owner without a criminal record and was permitted under Minnesota’s gun law to openly carry a handgun with a permit. The Department of Homeland Security, who controls ICE, has labeled Pretti as a “violent terrorist,” however “local officials have disputed that characterization,” said ABC.

-International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27: Established in November of 2005 by the United Nations General Assembly, International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27 marks the anniversary of liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp in 1945. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly under the resolution 60/7, “reaffirming that the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities, will forever be a warning to all people of the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice,” states A/RES/60/7 of the General Assembly. This Tuesday commemorates the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the millions of other murdered under Nazi persecution. However, this day also serves as a day of reflection, on the “deadly consequences of antisemitism and hatred, dehumanization and apathy left unchallenged,” states The United Nations Office at Geneva.
