SSHS Students’ Opinions on the Presidential Election

By Elle Wilcox

While the Presidential Election may have passed, views on the candidates, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, have not. Student voters around the halls of Saratoga Springs High School have given statements on their views on the 2020 election. Some support Biden, and some support Trump. Either way, many students at Saratoga Springs High School are educated voters and future voters, who look forward to a better future through their voting choice.

Daniel Weiss, a future voter in support of Trump, said, “He’s the only person really who has a plan.” Weiss supports Donald Trump, referencing Trump’s promises for a vaccine. Weiss believes that “almost everything bad said about him (Trump) is fabricated by the media” and sees Trump as a man who will “protect our constitutional rights by increasing law and order.” In Weiss’ words, Trump is “the right man for the job.”

Meanwhile, the Young Democrats Club of SSHS stated their support of Biden, suggesting policies that will be made under Biden to improve the country’s response to the Coronavirus pandemic. They believe that a mask mandate should be required and wish that the pandemic was approached with more consideration for the American people.

Senior Kendal McCloskey voted for Biden in this past election. McCloskey likes how “Biden is more into the environment” whereas Trump “doesn’t seem to look at it as a problem.” These views are shared by students Ella Mason and Kaylee Stallmer who both appreciate Biden’s efforts in “bettering gay rights” and “his views on women and racism.”

Meg Messitt, a SSHS senior, voiced her support for Trump in regards to his “great choice” of Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court.  Messitt views Barrett as a great choice due to her commitment to “uphold the constitution and protect our rights.” Messitt also appreciates Trump’s economic actions, with emphasis on the “almost four million jobs that have been created since his election” and his signing of “the biggest package of tax cuts and reforms in history.”

Considering these student opinions, this election promises for a wealth of knowledgeable and opinionated voters in elections for years to follow.
