SSHS Wrapped: Toga’s Musical Digest

December 12, 2022 by Ethan Conn (’25)

It is no surprise music plays a significant role in students’ lives, and at Saratoga Springs High School our tastes vary dramatically. From old time country to new age rap the music we listen to gets us through our day. But what exactly are students and staff playing in their airpods all day long? I’ve compiled a list of the most popular artists and songs at the moment!

Midnight Rain by Taylor Swift

Thoughts on the artist: “Honestly I love her, she gives such powerful messages in her songs, and I can easily relate to her music,” says Addie Kenney.

Wonderful Christmas by Paul McCartney

Thoughts on the artist: “I think he’s a very talented musician who deserves recognition for his song writing,” says Ava Zinter.

Carol of the Bells (instrumental) by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Thoughts on the artist: “It’s a great alternative way to listen to Christmas music, it makes me feel uplifting, emotional and joyful,” says Kristen Harrod.

All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey

Thoughts on the artist: The staff of Saratoga’s Business Department says, “we truly think she is the queen of Christmas and uplifts everyone during the holiday season with her cheerful voice.”

Step Into Christmas by Elton John

Thoughts on the artist: “He is obviously exceptionally talented, but not my favorite. I was in a Christmas mood this morning, so I decided to listen to him in the car on the way to work today,” says David Brown.

Uninvited by Alanis Morissette

Thoughts on the artist: Ciara Meyer said, “she is the queen of 90’s female rage– alongside the band Hole (Hole’s music is great, unlike their behavior in real life). She’s not my top streamed artist but I really felt the mood to listen to her today.”

Spirit in the Dark by Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles

Thoughts on the artist: “The combination of Aretha and Ray is a transcendent, spiritual experience,” says Damian Ubriaco.

Helmet by Steve Lacy

Thoughts on the artist: “ I really enjoy Steve Lacy’s new album very much especially this song, it’s very upbeat and fun,” says Declan Conn.

Ethan’s Pick: Kill Bill by SZA

Thoughts on the artist: I love SZA’S new album especially because she has not dropped in almost 5 years. Her work exceeds my expectations constantly.

This month’s top artist is…Mariah Carey!

According to Global Citizen, the pop icon is “a champion for underserved youth, LGBTQ+ rights, disaster relief, and more.” Global Citizen reports that, beyond her musical gifts, the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter “has spent her decades-long career supporting charitable efforts globally, and she is continuing to use her platform for good.” In addition to her many accomplishments, she has also been informally crowned the Queen of Christmas due to her astronomical success from her song titled “All I Want for Christmas is you”

Tune in to the next edition and see what new artists and songs are spreading throughout Saratoga Springs!
