Five Flowers to Add to Your Summer Garden

June 8, 2026 by Kayla Magnus (‘29)

Summer is right around the corner so I’ve compiled a list of my top five favorite summer flowers that can elevate any garden this year!

Lavender (Lavandula)

This is a classic flower that is loved by many. Lavender is a natural

attractor of pollinators such as bees and butterflies and its scent

is known for its calming properties. Their blooms usually last

from early summer to fall, and in most cases is considered a perineal.

It can thrive in the summer, but if you’re going to plant some this year,

make sure to do your research to ensure its survival.

  1. Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinesis)

These tropical flowers come in a wide range of incredibly vibrant colors.

They are the iconic summer flower and thrive in warm months. Their

blooms only last about a day but they are plentiful and absolutely

stunning. They grow in a bush form and are perennials. They are very easy

to care for and add a gorgeous pop of color to all summer gardens.

  1. Zinnia

Zinnias come in so many colors, are heat and drought resistant, and are

incredibly easy to care for. They are a great option if you want to add a pop

of color to your summer garden and are beginner friendly. You can also

easily harvest them for an indoor bouquet as well.

  1. Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)

Black eyed Susans are a wonderful addition to gardens with the beautiful

contrast of their bright yellow petals and deep brown centers. They are

perennials and have a very long blooming period. They almost look like

baby sunflowers and can add warmth and joy to your garden.

  1. Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus)

Snapdragons can be a very unique add on to your garden this summer. They come in a variety of colors, can endure the summer heat, and have a

iconic shape that makes them stand out amongst others. They bloom

from spring to fall and smell wonderful. They are also adored by

hummingbirds hence their tube like shape and bountiful nectar, which

is an added bonus.
