Book Review: “Mosquitoland”

By Eliza Krackeler

Fueled by antipsychotic medications and frustrations at her father and stepmom to last a lifetime, 16-year-old Mary Iris Malone (better known as Mim) runs away from home with nothing but stolen cash, a small backpack, and the clothes on her back. Striding past the main office and out the school doors, her adventure begins. Her witty and cutting internal dialogue animates the 1,000-mile bus ride with eccentric character and brings out Mim’s odd perception of reality. Despite her quirks, it is clear early on that she cares deeply for others and is truly the perfect protagonist for a book like this, a rip-roaring tale of human connection. As readers journey with Mim, to Cleveland, Ohio, she interacts with fellow travelers and (mostly) remains sane. Her strong will pushes her through the struggles of day-to-day life on the run.
